Theatre visit

 Monday 20th January

There was a time when Pat and I went to the theatre, both West End and local, very frequently but illness and Covid brought that to a halt. We have been to see a few shows over the past two years but have never properly got back into the habit again. It hasn’t helped that the theatre in Barking and the one in Ilford have been closed for sometime for structural repairs (wrong cement I am led to believe), nor the fact that prices in the West End appear to have rocketed since Covid. Queens theatre in Hornchurch however is going strong and it was there that we went on Monday night.

We booked our tickets for Rave On, a Rock and Roll extravaganza which celebrated the music of the 50’s and the first half of the 60’s, quite late and were lucky to get two seats exactly where we prefer,       6 rows back and central and Pat suggested that we go the whole hog and have dinner at her favoured restaurant, which is a relatively short walk to the theatre, before going onto the show. Another hammering for the Visa card.

This time there were no diversions and the journey was without mishap except to stop off to purchase some light bulbs, as you do. Seen the price of them?

The meal was as good as usual, although much too large for me, but Pat got very close to clearing her plate. She really enjoyed her meal and the one good point for me was that it gave me a chance to do some of the talking. Towards the end of the meal I had a blip and didn’t feel that well (nothing to do with the food) and struggled with the walk to the theatre but we got there in one piece.

A glass of Coke/Pepsi when we got into the theatre foyer worked wonders and by the time it was the time to make our way to our seats I was back to normal and looking forward to the show.

We were not disappointed and it was a truly memorable experience. This was not a tribute band showcasing particular icons but was about a period in time and the music of that time. The band consisted of five males playing and singing live and a lovely lady who was definitely not there as the token ‘candy floss’ but contributed enormously to highlight the contribution that females had on Rock and Roll at that time.

The musicians were top class, as were their singing and harmonies, and along with the female contribution, which was also top class, the show was well rounded, highly professional and wonderfully entertaining. I’m so glad we didn’t miss it. I can’t recommend it enough so if this show is on at a theatre near you and you enjoy the music of that time I can guarantee you will have a good time.

On the way home I started to compile in my mind my personal top ten records but when I got home and started to write them down I got to 100 and had to stop. I now have 10 top ten lists but finally and reluctantly setttled on the following :

                Peggy Sue                                 Buddy Holly

Till I gain control again            EmmyLou Harris

                Spare part                                  Bruce Springsteen

Smoke gets in your eyes           The Platters

Bad moon rising                        Credence Clearwater Revival

                 Downtown Girl                         Rod Stewart

                 Part of me                                 Suzy Bogguss

                 Donna                                       Ritchie Valens

                 The Blade                                 Ashley Monroe

                 Wishing                                     Buddy Holly

My apologies that so many fantastic and iconic recordings did not make this list.

  1. Not sure where Bob Dylan figures in your top artists but if you want to see a really great film, with an amazing performance by Timothee Chalamet, covering how Dylan changed folk music and then changed it again when he went electric, then go to see "A Complete Stranger" at the cinema!
